San Fransisco Strolls: Hills, History, & Hollywood Nostalgia
San Francisco has always felt familiar to me—not just for its charm, but because it’s the backdrop to so many of my favorite childhood films and shows, like Full House, The Princess Diaries, and Mrs. Doubtfire. Seeing the iconic landmarks in person felt like stepping into the screen and reliving those moments all over again. With Jeff working remotely for a company based in San Francisco, I had the perfect excuse to tag along on his work trip and spend time exploring this beautiful and nostalgic city.
Must-See Landmarks
Start your morning like a local by swinging by one of the many nearby cafes to grab a coffee and a fresh pastry, then head over to Mission Dolores Park for a peaceful stroll. True to San Fransisco style, the park sits on a hill - but the short climb is worth it. Find a cozy spot to sit, enjoy your breakfast, and soak in one of the best panoramic views of the city skyline. It's a relaxing and scenic way to begin your day.
The Palace of Fine Arts is a stunning architectural gem nestled in the Marina District. Originally built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, this grand structure invites you to wander through its peaceful grounds and marvel at its intricate details and impressive scale. With its soaring columns, serene lagoon, and timeless beauty, it’s easy to get lost in the moment. Today, it serves as a venue for everything from elegant galas and corporate events to captivating live performances.
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks, and it truly lives up to the hype. We took a scenic walk along the waterfront for some of the best views of the sweeping red arches stretching across the bay. Since we had already walked from the stunning Palace of Fine Arts, we skipped the full trek across the bridge (though many others were happily making the journey on foot). Instead, we opted to rest and soak in the scenery with a cozy stop at Equator Coffees, where we grabbed a snack and a much-needed cup of coffee. A perfect way to take in the beauty of this unforgettable spot.
Perched on one of San Francisco’s signature hills at the corner of Steiner and Grove Street, the Painted Ladies are a must-see historic landmark. Just east of Alamo Square Park, this row of pastel-painted Victorian homes—affectionately known as "Postcard Row"—offers a picture-perfect view with the city skyline rising just behind them. It’s a classic San Francisco scene that feels both timeless and historic.
At the corner of Broadway and Steiner Street sits a house that’s instantly recognizable to fans of Mrs. Doubtfire. While it’s still a private residence—so be sure to snap your photos respectfully—the current owners seem to embrace its celebrated status. Standing in front of it, it’s easy to picture those beloved movie moments coming to life all over again. A true nostalgic stop for any film lover!
Lombard Street, famously known as the “crookedest street in the world,” is a must-see whether you're walking or driving. Nestled on one of San Francisco’s many steep hills, its notable curves are lined with beautifully manicured flowers and offer a stunning view of the city below—picture-perfect from every angle.
Experiences
Fisherman’s Wharf is one of San Francisco’s most lively waterfront destinations. Packed with bustling shops, street vendors, and the mouthwatering scent of fresh seafood, it’s the perfect place to soak up the city’s coastal charm. Don’t miss a stop at Musee Mecanique—the nostalgic arcade featured in The Princess Diaries—where you can play vintage games and relive movie magic. Whether you're souvenir shopping, admiring views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, or strolling toward nearby Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf offers a little something for everyone.
Ghirardelli Square is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth—but it’s so much more than just a chocolate shop. It’s a full experience, complete with charming boutiques, delicious restaurants, and of course, indulgent chocolate treats. We stopped by the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience, then headed to the on-site tavern, which had a relaxed, welcoming vibe—perfect for a bite to eat or catching a game. And just downstairs? A creatively themed indoor mini golf course that highlights iconic San Francisco landmarks. A fun and unexpected twist to an already sweet stop!
If you're a history buff—or just a fan of the movie The Rock—Alcatraz is a must-see landmark that brings the past to life in a chilling and fascinating way. Your visit begins with a scenic ferry ride across the bay to the infamous island prison, once home to some of America's most notorious criminals. With tales of daring escape attempts and the harsh realities of prison life, Alcatraz holds no shortage of intrigue. The self-guided audio tour lets you explore the cells, corridors, and grounds at your own pace, offering a powerful glimpse into what daily life was like behind bars.
We're huge football fans—and proud Kansas City Chiefs supporters—so we planned our trip to San Francisco around their matchup with the 49ers. Our version of tailgating started with a hearty brunch at Pedro's Restaurant and Cantina. The food hit the spot, and the lively atmosphere set the tone for a great game day. After brunch, we made the easy walk to Levi's Stadium, where our seats were right by the visitors' tunnel—perfect for watching our team take the field up close.
The game was a blast, especially since we won! As a bonus, we even caught a sweat towel and arm band from a couple of players—definitely stinky, but also a cool souvenir. The cherry on top? The home fans were surprisingly friendly, which isn't always guaranteed when you're rooting for the away team. All in all, an unforgettable game day experience!
Where To Eat
Brunch
Just outside the hustle and bustle of San Francisco lies the charming town of Burlingame—a perfect spot for a slower pace, a little shopping, and a relaxing stroll. It’s an easy escape when you’re craving a quieter vibe.
When brunch calls, Caffe Central is a local favorite with a cozy feel and a delicious menu—but be warned, it’s popular for a reason and can get busy. If the wait is too long, head just a few doors down to Crepevine, where you’ll find a wide selection of both savory and sweet crepes to satisfy any craving.
Lunch
While Jeff was working, I had the chance to explore solo and take in the city at my own pace. After a full day on my feet, I stumbled upon the most charming little Mexican restaurant - Sacred Taco. The vibe was warm and welcoming, and the staff couldn’t have been kinder. They offered some great menu tips, so I kicked things off with fresh guacamole and followed it up with one of their specialty tacos. It was packed with flavor and exactly what I needed to refuel. A perfect little find that made my solo adventure even sweeter.
Dinner
Sticking around Burlingame for dinner? Don’t miss the New England Lobster Market & Eatery. This casual counter-service spot serves up one of the best lobster rolls around. Grab a seat on their outdoor patio, sip a drink, and enjoy fresh seafood with a side of sunshine. It’s the perfect end to a day spent exploring outside the city.
Final Thoughts
My younger self was thrilled to see the memorable houses from some of my favorite classic TV shows and movies brought to life. From Full House to Mrs. Doubtfire and The Princess Diaries, it felt like stepping right into the screen. Add in unforgettable sights like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and it was a dream come true. Mix that with incredible food and the built-in workout of climbing San Francisco’s many hills, and it made for one amazing trip we’ll never forget.
