Before You Book: Key Questions to Ask When Planning Your Trip

Ready to start planning your next vacation? It can feel overwhelming at first - especially if you don't have someone like my husband, who's basically like my personal travel planner. No matter what time of year you're looking to get away, asking yourself a few key questions can help narrow down your options and get you started on planning the perfect trip.

➢ Do you want a relaxing or adventurous vacation (or maybe a bit of both)?

This question will help set the tone for your entire trip. Are you dreaming of sleeping in, moving at your own pace, and soaking up the calm? Or are you craving new experiences and heart-pumping adventures? Maybe you're after a little of both? Your answer can also help determine how close - or far - you want to be from the action. Would you rather stay somewhere central, within walking distance to shops and restaurants? Or are you longing for a quiet, remote escape where you can truly disconnect?

➢ Do you want to go somewhere warm or cold?

This can be a game-changer when choosing your destination. If you're living in a cold, northern climate, a sunny beach escape might be just what you need. On the flip side, if you're surrounded by heat and humidity year-round, your hair (and sanity) might thank you for a mountain retreat or cooler weather getaway. Whether it's dead of winter and you're dreaming of wearing shorts again, or the height of summer and you're desperate for a break from the heat, let the current climate help guide your vacation vibe.

➢ Do you want to fly or drive?

How you get there can shape the entire experience. Flying might get you to your destination faster - especially if you're heading somewhere far or exotic - but it can also take up more of your vacation time. On the other hand, a road trip can be part of the fun, offering spontaneous stops and unexpected memories along the way. Consider whether you'll need a car once you arrive, or if you'll be in a walkable area where everything is close by. Thinking through the logistics ahead of time helps set the tone for a smooth, enjoyable start to your trip.

➢ Who are you traveling with?

Some of the best travel memories come from the people you share them with - whether it's a partner, a sibling, a friend, or your kids. Think about who brings out the best in your adventures. Are they up for the same kind of pace and experiences you're craving? Choosing the right travel companion can elevate the whole trip, turning everyday moments into lifelong memories.

➢ Is it high travel season? Will it be busy there?

How do you feel about crowds? Some destinations buzz with energy during peak season, while others can feel overwhelming. Think about whether you're comfortable traveling during busy times - like school breaks or holidays. A little research can go a long way in helping you decide if you'd rather soak up the excitement or opt for a quieter, off-season experience.

As you're planning your trip, don't let the logistics hold you back. One of the best pieces of advice a friend once gave me was this: Buy the ticket. If you have the desire to travel and see the world, don't overthink it. Don't let the "what-ifs" talk you out of it. Just buy the ticket - you won't regret it.
