Not-So-Touristy Things to Do in New York - From a Former Local

There are countless things to do in New York City, but if you're looking to go beyond the typical tourist traps, this list is for you - from someone who used to call the city home. Whether you're planning a visit or just want to experience a different side of New York, here are some unforgettable adventures that are off the beaten path:

🌳 Storm King Art Center

Hop on a short train ride to Orange County, NY (yes, still New York - not California) to discover Storm King, an expansive outdoor sculpture park. Even if you're not an art lover, you'll love strolling the wide-open grounds and soaking in the scenery. A perfect way to escape the city hustle.

🏰 The Met Cloisters

You've heard of The Met, but did you know there's a medieval castle museum in upper Manhattan? The Cloisters, nestled in Fort Tyron Park, offers European art, architecture, and peaceful views that feel like a world away from midtown. A must for history buffs or anyone seeking a quiet afternoon.

🎾 The US Open

If you're in town late August to early September, don't miss the US Open. Tickets give you access to much more than just a match - think gourmet food, interactive exhibits, games, and amazing people-watching. It's an electric atmosphere even if you're not a tennis fanatic.

🎤 Summer Concert Series in Central Park

If you're visiting NYC in the summer, don't miss the chance to catch a free concert right in Central Park, thanks to Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series. You can check the lineup ahead of time - or just show up and be surprised! We got to see Jason Derulo live, and it was such a fun and energetic way to start the day. Music, sunshine, and the city skyline? Yes, please.

🐪 Ride a Camel at the Bronx Zoo

Sure, you've been to a zoo - but have you ridden a camel? We always wanted to, and surprisingly got the chance in the Bronx. It's an extra cost, but a one-of-a-kind NYC story for your travel memories.

🐎 Belmont Park Races

Fancy a day at the races? Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes, is a fun spot for horse racing even when the big event isn't happening. Whether you're dressed to the nines or casually hanging out, the energy and excitement make it a great day out.

🍷 Pop-Up Museums - Rose Mansion

NYC is packed with classic museums, but its pop-ups are a different kind of fun. My mom and I had a blast at Rose Mansion - each room featured a new wine to try and a unique theme (including a giant ball pit and life-sized birthday cake!). It was playful, Insta-worthy, and a memory we'll never forget.

🛥 Dinner Cruise on the Hudson

Want a new view of the city? A sunset dinner cruise along the Hudson gives you dreamy views of the skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and even the 9/11 Memorial - from the water. It was such a romantic, relaxing night.

🌊 Jet Ski around NYC

This might just top the list. We jet skied around Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty (just like in Hitch). I had never driven a jet ski before, but the guides were amazing with safety and support. One led the group while another stayed back with the slower riders - so everyone could go at their own pace. It was thrilling, unforgettable, and one of our favorite NYC memories.

No matter your adventure level, there's truly something for everyone in New York (and okay...maybe I'm a little biased). Whether you're seeking thrills or something more low-key, plan your trip around experiences that will create unforgettable memories. And don't forget to snap plenty of photos - not just to relive the moments later, but to prove you actually did that crazy adventure. 😉
